Orthopedic pain is a concern for people of all ages: young people who lead active lives and are hard on their joints, baby boomers feeling the effects of arthritis, and elderly adults. If you are experiencing orthopedic pain, you should visit an orthopedic doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating problems in the body’s musculoskeletal system, which includes the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves. There are a number of treatment options available to you.
Physical therapy. Orthopedic physical therapists diagnose and treat patients suffering from orthopedic pain as well as rehabilitate patients post orthopedic surgery. Physical therapists use joint mobilizations, strength training, hot and cold packs, and electrical stimulation to reduce pain and return patients to their normal lives.
Exercise. Though it may be painful at first, exercise helps to maintain flexibility in the joints, keep the muscles around the joints, bones, and cartilage tissue strong and healthy, and reduce pain. A balanced fitness program should include exercises like walking, swimming, cycling and stretching. Avoid activities like running, which place stress on the joints.
Healthy nutrition. Keeping a healthy balanced diet will help you control your weight, which will reduce the amount of stress placed on your joints and decrease joint pain.
Surgery. If exercise and therapy do not alleviate your pain, it may be necessary to have orthopedic surgery. This is an option for you and your orthopedic surgeon to discuss. Be sure to ask questions and understand what the procedure involves.
Other treatment options your orthopedic doctor may suggest include:
• Rest
• Medication
• Orthopedic support products
It is important to remember that, whatever option you and your doctor select, you may not be able to “cure” the condition. Still, with treatment and lifestyle modifications, you should be able to return to a life that is not controlled by orthopedic pain.
