Sniffling? Sneezing? Achy? Feverish? Wondering if you have the flu? Ask yourself these questions:
Have you had a flu vaccine this season?
If you’ve had the flu vaccine this season, it’s not very likely that you have the flu. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the seasonal flu vaccine protects you from the three influenza viruses that researchers determined would be most widespread this season. However, it is possible to have a different influenza virus.
Do you have symptoms such as runny or stuffy nose, coughing, sore throat, headache, muscle aches and fatigue?
According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, these are all possible symptoms of the flu. If you have the flu, you may experience some or all of these symptoms.
Do you have a fever?
Many people who get the flu have a fever as one of their symptoms; however, not everyone who gets the flu has a fever.
Do you have vomiting or diarrhea?
While these symptoms are sometimes associated with the flu, they are more often experienced by children suffering from the flu than they are by adults who have the virus.
Have you had contact with someone who has the flu?
Even seemingly healthy people can pass along the flu virus. Most adults are contagious a full day before they start to experience symptoms and up to a week after they become sick. Other people, including young children, are sometimes able to infect others for a more extended period of time.
